Williams & Connolly Wins Two U.S. Supreme Court Victories

June 2026

On June 18, 2026, the U.S. Supreme Court issued two opinions in favor of Williams & Connolly clients. This is the second time in 2026 that the Court ruled twice for W&C on the same day, resulting in a 4-0 Term in cases in which Williams & Connolly was merits counsel.

In Munson P. Hunter, III, Petitioner v. United States, the Court ruled 8-1 in favor of Williams & Connolly client Munson P. Hunter, III.  The Court determined that defendants can challenge their sentences in circumstances where enforcing  an appeal waiver would result in a miscarriage of justice.  Lisa Blatt presented oral argument on March 3, 2026.  Other team members included Luke McCloud, Rohit Asirvatham, Chris Baldacci, Dana Kinel, Yoav Paz-Priel, James Sasso and Mihir Khetarpal.

In T.M. v. University of Maryland Medical System Corp., the Court ruled 5-4 in favor of Williams & Connolly client The University of Maryland Medical System Corp.  The Court held that the Rooker-Feldman doctrine prohibits a federal district court from reviewing what is essentially an appeal of a state court decision, regardless of whether the state case has made a final determination or is still subject to review in the state court.  Lisa Blatt presented oral argument on April 20, 2026.  Other team members included Amy Saharia, Erin Sielaff, Rohit Asirvatham, Andrew Guiang.
