Williams & Connolly Wins Two Unanimous U.S. Supreme Court Victories

On January 20, 2026, the U.S. Supreme Court issued two opinions finding unanimously in favor of Williams & Connolly clients.  

In Coney Island Auto Parts Unlimited, Inc. v. Burton, the Court ruled 9-0 in favor of Williams & Connolly client Jeanne Ann Burton, holding that Federal Rule of Civil Procedure 60(c)(1)’s reasonable-time limit applies to a motion alleging that a judgment is void under Rule 60(b)(4). Lisa Blatt presented oral argument on Nov. 4, 2025. Other team members included Luke McCloud and associates Erin Sielaff, Jason Clayton, and Christopher Baldacci.

In Ellingburg v. U.S., the Court ruled 9-0 in favor of Williams & Connolly client Holsey Ellingburg, Jr., holding that criminal restitution under the Mandatory Victim Restitution Act is penal for purposes of the Constitution's ex post facto clause.
