Williams & Connolly Named Among Law360’s “Firms That Won Big at the Supreme Court”

July 2020

On July 10, 2020, Law360 published its yearly “Law Firm Scorecard” analyzing Supreme Court wins and losses for the 2019 Term.  Naming Williams & Connolly as one of the “Firms That Won Big at the Supreme Court,” the publication highlighted the firm's 3-0 win/loss record, and noted that Supreme Court and Appellate Litigation chair Lisa Blatt “wasted no time racking up wins” since her return to Williams & Connolly last year.  Lisa, who leads the firm’s practice along with Amy Saharia and Sarah Harris, emphasized that the “firm’s Supreme Court wins reflect a ‘true team effort.’”  Williams & Connolly’s Supreme Court cases this Term include the following:

  • U.S. Patent & Trademark Office v. Booking.com (June 30, 2020) (holding that the addition of “.com” to a generic term can create a protectable trademark).  Lisa Blatt presented oral argument in early May, marking the first case in the Court’s history to be argued remotely, and the first case where live audio was available to the public.  Sarah Harris was lead brief-writer and second-chaired the case; other members of the team included Eden Schiffmann, Thomas Chapman, and John Swanson.
  • Romag Fasteners, Inc. v. Fossil, Inc. (Apr. 23, 2020) (holding unanimously that a plaintiff in a trademark infringement suit is not required to show that a defendant willfully infringed the plaintiff's trademark as a precondition to a profits award).  The team representing Romag Fasteners, Inc. included Lisa Blatt, Amy Saharia, Joshua Podoll, and Kaitlin Beach.
  • Atlantic Richfield Co. v. Christian (Apr. 20, 2020) (holding that Superfund site landowners cannot implement an alternative cleanup plan that the Environmental Protection Agency has not approved).  The team representing Atlantic Richfield Co. included Lisa Blatt, John Williams, Sarah Harris, Luke McCloud, Meng Jia Yang, and Thomas Chapman.
