John Buckley To Speak At German Arbitration Institute (DIS) Event

May 2026

On May 21, 2026, Williams & Connolly senior counsel John Buckley will be a featured speaker on Settlement Facilitation in International Arbitration, a webinar under the auspices of the German Arbitration Institute (DIS). From the perspective of a non-German arbitration practitioner and arbitrator, he will comment on how the German approach under the DIS Rules, where arbitral tribunals are obligated to seek and encourage amicable settlements unless a party objects, is perceived internationally and whether it can enhance international arbitration and deliver more time- and cost-efficient proceedings.

John, who was a partner in the firm for almost four decades, founded and led the firm’s International Arbitration practice group. He now acts as an independent arbitrator in international and domestic arbitrations. A Fellow of the College of Commercial Arbitrators and the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators, he has served as chair, sole arbitrator, and co-arbitrator in institutional (AAA, ICDR, ICC and CPR) and ad hoc arbitrations. He was a member of the International Chamber of Commerce Task Force that produced its report on settlement facilitation in international arbitration.
