Partner John Villa spoke on a panel titled “The Recent Explosion in Disqualification Motions” during the 23rd Annual Legal Malpractice & Risk Management Conference (“LMRM”) held on March 5-7, 2024, in Chicago, Illinois. John’s panel examined the reasons why disqualification motions are proliferating, the conflicts of interest that commonly lead to disqualification, the types of counsel most often affected, the enforceability of advance conflict waivers, the lateral movement of attorneys, the potential for civil liability, and practical risk management advice to prevent disqualification motions. The LMRM conference is a mainstay of the legal malpractice defense bar, general counsels of major law firms, and insurance carriers who provide coverage for law firms. It focuses upon important developments in the law, litigation of legal malpractice claims, legal malpractice insurance, professional responsibility, and risk management strategies.
John serves as co-chair of the firm’s Financial Services and Banking practice group and focuses his practice on legal malpractice defense as well as corporate, securities and financial services related litigation.
