Trial Victory for A Place For Mom

June 2025

On May 28, 2026, a unanimous jury in the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California, Eastern Division, handed A Place For Mom, Inc. a complete victory, finding that a former Regional Sales Director committed fraud against the company and breached her fiduciary duties as an employee.

In November 2023, A Place For Mom terminated the employment of Regional Sales Director Tarra Castillo after an investigation revealed she had manipulated lead source attribution metrics, increasing her potential for sales compensation, and failed to provide any documentation to support the changes she had made.

In October 2024, Ms. Castillo sued A Place For Mom for disability discrimination and retaliation under the California Fair Employment and Housing Act. A Place For Mom removed the case to federal court and filed counterclaims against Ms. Castillo for fraud against the company for changing attribution data and breach of fiduciary duty, among other claims. The case proceeded to a jury trial beginning May 19, 2026.

After seven days of trial and only a few hours of deliberations, the eight-person jury returned a unanimous verdict rejecting every one of Ms. Castillo's claims and finding in A Place For Mom's favor on its counterclaims, specifically determining that Ms. Castillo committed fraud against the company through intentional misrepresentations in her sales data, and breached her fiduciary duties while employed at the company. The verdict was a total victory for A Place For Mom.

Judge Jesus G. Bernal presided over the trial.

Williams & Connolly LLP (C. Bryan Wilson and Jennalee Beazley) and Umhofer, Mitchell & King LLP (Elizabeth A. Mitchell) represented A Place For Mom, Inc.

The case is Castillo v. A Place For Mom, Inc., No. 5:24-cv-02672-JGB-DTB (C.D. Cal.).
