Williams & Connolly associate Eric Tucker recently secured a significant pro bono victory when the Appellate Court of Maryland reversed all convictions against our pro bono client and remanded the case for further proceedings. Our client had been sentenced to 10 years in prison on multiple drug charges after police searched his vehicle following a DUI arrest and discovered pills.
On appeal, Eric successfully argued that the search of our client’s car was unlawful because it was not supported by reasonable suspicion that evidence related to the DUI would be found in the vehicle. Eric also successfully countered the state’s argument that the drugs would have been inevitably discovered during a later search.
This result reflects W&C’s commitment to pro bono advocacy, as Eric joins a long line of W&C attorneys who have worked to hold the government to its burden in criminal cases. Over the last 20 years, W&C attorneys have handled over 170 appeals for the Maryland Office of the Public Defender. W&C associates have obtained reversals in over five cases just in the last year.
