Overview
Williams & Connolly Senior Counsel John J. Buckley, Jr. authored the article “Important Revisions: CPR 2026 Non-Administered Rules: Best Ad Hoc Practices” for the New York Dispute Resolution Lawyer, published by the New York State Bar Association. The article examines the significant updates to the International Institute for Conflict Prevention & Resolution’s (“CPR”) Rules for Non-Administered Arbitration, which took effect on July 1, 2026. Among the key revisions John discusses are new provisions addressing the use of generative artificial intelligence (AI) in arbitral proceedings, enhanced procedures for early disposition of claims and defenses, strengthened protections against overbroad document discovery, and measures to leverage technology to reduce costs and improve efficiency. John is co-chair of the CPR Rules Revision Committee and led the updating project.
John Buckley, a partner in the firm for almost four decades, founded and led the firm’s International Arbitration practice group. He now acts as independent arbitrator in international and domestic arbitrations. A Fellow of the College of Commercial Arbitrators and the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators, he has served as chair, sole arbitrator, and co-arbitrator in institutional (AAA, ICDR, ICC and CPR) and ad hoc arbitrations.
