Gloria Maier litigates a broad range of complex civil and criminal matters.  She has significant experience representing media and technology clients in high-stakes litigation and investigations.  Gloria has defended numerous defamation lawsuits, as well as cases advancing other claims arising from the publication or online display of information. 

In addition to Gloria’s First Amendment and Media practice, she also has experience representing companies and individuals in investigations by, and litigation against, the Department of Justice, the SEC, state attorneys general, and other government bodies, including in matters relating to government contracts.  Gloria has also successfully defended civil lawsuits alleging employment discrimination and violations of securities law.  Gloria currently serves on the defense team in the monopolization case brought against Google by the United States Department of Justice and several state attorneys general.

Gloria has represented corporations and individuals at all stages of litigation, including pre-litigation strategy, discovery, dispositive motions practice, and trial.  Gloria enjoys leading litigation teams, as well as providing practical, goal-oriented advice and services to her clients. 

Gloria received her B.A., magna cum laude, from the University of Maryland in 2004 and her J.D., with highest honors, from The George Washington University Law School in 2011, where she was a Notes Editor for The George Washington Law Review.  Before joining Williams & Connolly as an associate in 2013, she served as a law clerk to The Honorable Marvin J. Garbis and The Honorable Benson Everett Legg, both of the United States District Court for the District of Maryland.

Representative Experience

Though all cases vary and none is predictive, Gloria’s experience includes:

  • Successful representation of HBO in defamation suit concerning episode of satirical news program regarding coal industry.  The court granted a motion to dismiss.
  • Defense, through settlement, of ABC News against libel and product disparagement claims by the producers of “lean finely textured beef.”
  • Successful defense of defamation lawsuit arising from article about failure of Hong Kong lending business.
  • Successful defense, through summary judgment victory in state court, of employer against employment discrimination claim.
  • Successful defense of individual client in criminal case involving charges of mail fraud, wire fraud, and tax fraud.  
  • Defense of BP in multi-district litigation proceedings arising out of the Deepwater Horizon spill.
