Williams & Connolly Secures Appellate Win on Behalf of Google

January 2020

On January 6th, 2020, the United States Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit ruled in favor of Williams & Connolly’s client Google, overturning an earlier decision by the Patent Trial and Appeal Board (“PTAB”) that had upheld a patent owned by Koninklijke Philips Electronics NV in inter partes review proceedings instituted by Google.  In a unanimous decision, the Federal Circuit held that Google had shown the Philips patent was invalid as obvious.  Counsel Andrew Trask argued the appeal on behalf of Google, and the team representing Google included partners Kevin HardyDavid Krinsky, and Aaron Maurer. Recognizing the significance of this win, the firm was named a “Legal Lion” by Law360 in its “Weekly Verdict: Legal Lions & Lambs.”
