In 30 years at Williams & Connolly, John Vardaman has had extensive experience in complex civil and criminal litigation. He has appeared in the United States Supreme Court and in state and federal courts throughout the country at the trial and appellate levels and was identified as one of "Washington's Top Lawyers" by Washingtonian magazine (December 2004). The 2004-2017 editions of Chambers USA: America’s Leading Lawyers for Business ranked Mr. Vardaman in the top tier for general commercial litigation.
In the past decade, Mr. Vardaman has concentrated in serving as national trial counsel to a number of large corporations faced with mass tort and mass disaster claims. These cases have involved a variety of products, including chemicals, medical devices, and pharmaceutical products. He has also served as lead counsel in multi-plaintiff litigation arising from airline and rail crashes. His role, and that of Williams & Connolly, in these cases involves developing and implementing the overall strategy for the litigation, participating in multi-district proceedings and in trials in state and federal courts, and coordination of counsel throughout the United States. Mr. Vardaman has also represented a number of individuals and corporations in complex commercial litigation.
From 1999-2002, Mr. Vardaman served as General Counsel to the United States Golf Association. He is a member of the American College of Trial Lawyers and has served as a member of the D.C. Circuit Advisory Committee on Procedures, 1990-1992; the District of Columbia Bar Task Force on Civility in the Profession; and the ABA Long Range Planning Group on Civil Justice System Improvements, 1993-1994. Mr. Vardaman is also currently a member of the Board of Trustees of Washington & Lee University.
