Steve Urbanczyk has defended companies in complex products liability litigation for more than 30 years. In 2010, Mr. Urbanczyk was elected as a Fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers. Identified as one of "Washington's Top Lawyers" by Washingtonian magazine in its most recent listings (December 2004, 2007, 2009, and 2011), he is also nationally ranked in the area of products liability in the 2012 edition of Benchmark Litigation.
Mr. Urbanczyk has been involved as national trial counsel in the nationwide defense of mass tort litigation involving pharmaceuticals (Prempro, Norplant), biologics (vaccines), medical devices (silicone breast implants), appliances (coffeemaker fires), and agricultural equipment (tractor fires). Mr. Urbanczyk lead trial teams to defense verdicts in two of the first Prempro trials in Little Rock, Arkansas, and has directed and participated in the trials of pharmaceutical cases in several state courts, most with successful outcomes. He also has tried or been involved in the trial preparation of cases in a number of other state and federal courts around the country.
Mr. Urbanczyk has also handled a broad range of other civil litigation matters, including personal injury and property damage claims arising from oil and gas drilling accidents, property damage claims arising from alleged contamination of food products, antitrust, commercial fraud, medical malpractice, international trade, and other general commercial cases.
Prior to coming to Williams & Connolly LLP in 1978, Mr. Urbanczyk served for three years as an Assistant to the Solicitor General in the U.S. Department of Justice, where he submitted briefs and presented oral arguments for the government in civil and criminal litigation in the Supreme Court.
Mr. Urbanczyk has served on the firm's Executive Committee and as chair of the Hiring Committee. He also has been a member of the Board of Trustees of Holy Cross College, and was the first chairperson of the Board of Directors of Covenant House Washington.
