John Villa, litigation partner at Williams & Connolly LLP, thinks that the media have overhyped the threat of government enforcement actions against GCs. In September, he released a 79-page white paper that looks at how often the U.S. Department of Justice and the SEC go after general counsel, and in what circumstances. Mr. Villa found that while criminal and civil actions against top company lawyers have roughly doubled in recent years, the actual number of such cases remains very small. Mr. Villa discussed his research with senior reporter, Sue Reisinger of Corporate Counsel.
